Ciara Appleberry: Community Responsibility Today, at 22 years old, Ciara’s interest in her community is inspirational. Whether shopping on Broadway or riding the bus to work, the life-long Chelsea resident is still quick to strike up a conversation with a stranger. But now Ciara’s passion for people has a focus. As a leader of Roca, Ciara’s energy is devoted to community organizing, violence prevention and youth education.

Jose Ramos: Relapses and Accountability Jose’s transformation came slow and with many relapses; but his change process became evident as soon as he started showing up for himself in a different way and started using Roca’s Youthworkers to guide him in life skills and basic job training. Learn how Jose is able to sustain a job in Whole foods, learn about his struggles and his amazing strength to not go back to the streets, and his fight against the relapses.

Julio Hernandez: Finding his Voice Julio struggled for a very long time to find his voice. When we met Julio he had dropped out of school four separate times and was involved heavily in the streets with drugs while dealing with trauma and abuse that was preventing him from moving forward. The community did not trust Julio because he had caused so much harm to his peers and his surroundings-no one thought he was able to change. It is an honor for Roca to let you know that Julio has graduated high school, is a peer leader at Roca and is an active member in his community through his performances, outreach, and organizing.

Sulai Rose: Leading by Word and Deed

Sulai is leading by word and deed, above all else inspires others to want to change and do something better because of her energy and hope. This hopeful young woman works tirelessly to make positive changes in her life. Although she was involved heavy in the streets, Sulai’s participation in Roca began to help her transition from becoming angry and alone to finding forgiveness and becoming a better person for herself and for her family.
